Network Marketing TodayWith the introduction of the internet, network marketing today is very different from what it was 20 years ago. The typical marketing model of the 1970s and 80s was a party plan model and recruiters were taught to go out and speak to as many people as they could as quickly as they could in order to build a network marketing team of distributors beneath them or a downline as it is called.

Today, although this model is still practised in some places and by some people, the majority of companies and indeed representatives have turned to more targeted forms of advertising to find both customers and business partners.

This has allowed many companies to grow into multiple markets across the globe quickly and to establish a customer base across continents. For some in the business, this has proved a very successful and lucrative time to get involved but for many it has added to the frustration of trying to make money from home with this business model. Internet marketing is both expensive and difficult to master and this can prove both expensive and confusing for new people coming into network marketing who are trying to build a team of distributors “beneath” them.

The internet has not been the Holy Grail many marketers believed it would or even could be. It has de-personalised business and made many turn away from multi level marketing due to being left with a bad taste in their mouths when approached or pitched or even scammed online by an over zealous network marketer.

The term network marketing pyramid has often been used to describe the industry and if you take an objective view of the industry and look closely at how some marketers have been building (or failing to build) their network marketing business today, you can see why this term is often laid at the door of honest marketers.

The bottom line for me is this…

If you’re planning to build a network marketing business today, tomorrow or five years from now, remember this is a people business and your success comes from treating people the way you would like to be treated; with honesty, patience and understanding.
